Seddio House Still Lights The Way At Christmas

With winter still weeks away, the weather outside was kinda frightening, but it didn't deter dozens of hearty revelers who showed up late Sunday afternoon for the 45th annual Seddio house Christmas lighting and holiday display debut.

The animated displays and collage of colorful lights that burn brightly for several hours after dark for about five weeks every holiday season are like a beacon that brings hundreds of visitors to the southeast corner of Flatlands Avenue and East 93rd Street.

Native Canarsien Frank Seddio, a former surrogate judge and state assemblyman and currently a real estate executive, flipped the switched shortly after sundown to the enjoyment of onlookers, young and old who oohed and aahed as the lights came on and animatronic displays came to life, despite trying to keep warm as temperatures hovered around the 40 degree mark and brisk winds made it seem even colder.

The annual display has been a local fixture since 1963 when the late Frank Guarino lived at the house. Years later when the Seddio family called it home, they maintained the tradition.

This year's display is dedicated to the late Louise Strumwasser, a community activist and longtime area resident. Her husband and members of the family were present to help Seddio flip the switch. Other guests in attendance were Borough President Marty Markowitz, Seddio's assembly successor and co-host, Alan Maisel, Holy Family's Father Edward, Rev. Nathan Williams of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church and, of course, Santa Claus. Festive holiday music was provided by the P.S. 115 Glee Club.
