PS/IS 66 Students Care And Share With GIs Overseas

(From left)Eighth graders Elijah Washington, Alicia Rowe and Ashleigh David wrap gifts to be sent to soldiers in Iraq.
An eighth grade class at PS/IS 66 wanted to spread some joy and good will this holiday season for soldiers stationed in Iraq following a lesson of caring and sharing in Jean-Ellen Gargiulo's Social Studies class. To fulfill their aspiration they collected six cartons packed with non-perishable goods which were shipped out to the soldiers the day after Thanks-giving. The collections began in Octo-ber and took six weeks to complete.

Among the items sent to the GIs were snacks such as chips, cookies and candy.

"Regardless of their position on the war, the students, some of whom have brothers and cousins fighting over there, wanted to do something nice for the soldiers," Gargiulo said.

The social studies teacher, who has a nephew in Iraq, gathered the cartons and with the help of her local VFW had them delivered free of cost.

"We emphasize the development of citizenship and stress the importance of good character. Through this activity our seniors have demon-strated how a community can work together for an important cause," PS/IS 66 Principal Joel Rubenfeld said.
