Thieves In Minivan Accost, Rob Three Victims Of Purses In two separate incidents - five minutes and just a few blocks apart - three thieves in a minivan accosted three young women and robbed them of their pocketbooks at gunpoint, police said. The first of the two robberies occurred at about 11:25 p.m. on Friday, November 23 on Avenue J close to East 95th Street, police from the 69th Precinct reported. Two Canarsie residents, one age 20 and the other age 21 were walking along a shadowed section past the Canarsie High School fence bordering Avenue J when a dark minivan pulled up next to them and one man got out of the front passenger seat and another from a rear seat. As they approached the women, the first man pulled a gun from his belt, pointed it at the frightened victims and said, "Give me all your money," and then grabbed the victims' purses. The thieves ran back to the minivan and, with a third man driving, fled east along Avenue J. No more than five minutes later, a 19-year-old Canarsie woman was accosted by what appeared to be the same trio on Avenue J near East 104th Street. As in the other case, two men got out of the vehicle, one of them told the woman to give him her pocketbook and when she started to hesitate, swung the gun at the back of her head. Fortunately, the gun butt only grazed her and she gave the man her purse. The thieves then fled again east on Avenue J. The thieves were only described as male blacks, with one, the man with the gun, wearing a dark coat. No other description of the others was given Police ask that anyone with information please call the 69th Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 257-6215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be held strictly confidential.
Officials here said they want to "get these guys," because the record of robberies in the local area is far below that of other precincts. One source said robberies here are down 25 percent, whereas they are down only an average of six percent throughout the city.
