Civic Association Marks 15 Years

Celebrating 15 years of calling itself "The Voice For All Canarsie," members of the South Canarsie Civic Association (SCCA) spoke about a variety of local issues at last week's monthly meeting at the Hebrew Educational Society.

After state Assemblyman Alan Maisel presented a proclamation to the civic group's president, Mary Anne Sallustro and its board members, a discussion focused on rezoning, park construction and the placement of a 52-foot cell phone tower at Canarsie Road.

Vice president Steven Kaye spoke about the renovations going at Canarsie Park and compared it to other parks in Brooklyn.

"The fence that has been put in front of the park was a hideous idea," he said. "And they dumped the lowest quality of material in our parks."

A heated discussion broke out between Kaye and Lenny Fogel, vice president of the United Canarsie South Civic Association, who said most civic leaders who attended the initial meeting with the Department of Parks agreed they didn't want any fence along the park, implying that complaining about it now is too late.

Kaye addressed local overdevelopment, maintaining that builders want to increase the population and taxes without considering the fact that many things in the community are diminishing.

"More people are coming in and the shopping that was here is gone, there is less and less parking for the families moving into the three and four family homes," he said. "They're creating something that does not look like it's going to be sustainable and successful in the long run."

Sallustro rehashed some of the problems the community has faced over the years, starting with the first community issue the SCCA opposed: homes for the mentally disabled. When the group started in 1992, Sallustro and other residents fought a group home for the mentally disabled proposed for the corner of Avenue K and Remsen Avenue. They claimed the community had an abundance of similar establishments.
