An elegant dinner wasn't the only thing on the menu at the Ambiance Restaurant last Thursday evening when politicians, community leaders and business owners attended the annual Avenue L Merchants Association Award Gala.
Distinguishing awards were presented, recognizing and rewarding those who made significant contributions to the merchants association over the years.
State Senator John Sampson received the Merit Award and State Assemblyman Alan Maisel was presented with the Distinguished Service Award.
Other community leaders, like the 69th Precinct Community Council Vice President Roxanne Persaud were awarded for their efforts working with community in various organizations. Persaud is also a member of Community Board 18 and serves as the secretary for the Brooklyn Canarsie Lions.

The Canarsie Courier was presented with the Distinguished News Publica-tion Award for covering a wide range of events which many businesses held along the shopping strip.
