Can You Pass A Test Given To Immigrants To Earn Citizenship?

You may be smarter than a fifth grader but do you have what it takes to become a citizen?

With illegal immigration one of the most controversial national issues today, we thought we'd give our readers a chance to see if they could answer a sampling of basic American history questions given to immigrants when they apply for citizenship.

When immigrants want to become Americans, they must take a civics test as part of their naturalization interview before a Citizenship and Immigration Services (INS) officer. The questions are usually selected from a list of 100 sample questions that prospective citizens can look at ahead of the interview. Some are easy, some are not. Below are some of the more difficult ones from the official United States Immigration and Naturalization Services Web site.

NOTE: Candidates are not given multiple choices in the naturalization interview, which is conducted orally. (No cheating! Answers will appear in next week's issue.)
