Riders
of the Canarsie subway line don't seem to be too upset with the general
condition of L trains, according to report cards they filled out last summer and
which were recently evaluated.
Some even filled out the forms as they were handed them
on August 15 at the Rockaway Parkway station, making sure they immediately got
the point across to authorities that the line is, generally, okay - with a few
exceptions.
The results of the report cards were were released last
Friday, giving the line an overall "C," which is, after all, a passing grade.
According to the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA),
42,000 cards were distributed over a three day period. Communters were asked to
grade the line on 21 separate service attributes, from Delays During Rush Hour
to Sense of Security in Stations, Cleanliness, Comfort and Waiting Times Between
Trains.
Officials said the lowest mark for the line was a "D"
for being too crowded at rush hour.
"Given that the Canarsie line has seen more than its
fair share of service interruptions over the past few years during the
installation of communications equipment, I'm not totally surprised by the
grade," said Howard H. Roberts, Jr. president of MTA-NYC Transit. "The line also
has unprecedented ridership growth, growth we didn't fully anticipate and have
been unable to respond to as quickly as we would have liked."
MTA authorities said since 2000, ridership on the line
has increased 20 percent, compared to a nine percent system-wide increase,
fueled largely by a boom in residential growth in Williamsburg and Greenpoint.
One rider getting off the train at the Rockaway Parkway
terminal station said she gave the line a "C-plus" because "they have a lot of
new stuff now, including the trains themselves." She said she "especially
appreciates the good and cold air conditioning" the most.
