Rkwy. Pkwy. Shopping Center Rite Aid To Close

Now it's official. The Rite Aid Pharmacy in the shopping center at Rockaway Parkway and Avenue M will close next Wednesday, September 26. It is the second large chain store in that shopping center to close, following Waldbaum's supermarket, which shut down earlier this year.

"This place is gonna be a ghost town," muttered one of the owners of the smaller, independently owned stores in the shopping center. He refused to give his name.

According to Ashley Flowers, a spokesperson for Rite Aid's corporate headquarters, when the store at 1847 Rockaway Parkway closes, "all patient information will be transferred to the store at 9738 Seaview Avenue, two blocks south of the present store. We are closing (this store) because (the Seaview Avenue) location offers better service, more parking and it's a newer store."

She said, "As part of Brooks and Eckerd acquisition, established on June 4, 2007, more than 1,800 Eckerd and Brook stores close and, the company sought to consolidate and condense stores that would allow them to offer the best service."

Dorothy Turano, district manager of Community Board 18, said, "It disturbs me that another store in that location is closing. However, let's just wait and see if the realtor can attract new business to revitalize that prime location."

Last year, Eckerd changed the name of the Rockaway Parkway store from Genovese to Eckerd. And when Eckerd bought Rite Aid, the store at that location put up a sign saying, "Rite Aid - Coming Soon."

The owner of the smaller store said, "They ought to say 'Going Soon.'"
