Charles Rogers

Firefighters had to tear the door off the Lexus to get to the injured man.
The driver of a 2006 Lexus was injured and taken to the hospital on Wednesday, September 12 when his car collided with a 2005 Dodge Charger at the intersection of Flatlands Avenue and East 92nd Street.

The accident occurred when Bernard Jefferson, 35, of Nostrand Avenue was driving his Lexus northbound on East 92nd Street at about 5 p.m. and said had a green light to pass Flatlands Avenue.

Meanwhile, the driver of the other vehicle, Yvonne Gray, 46, of Murdock Avenue, The Bronx, said she had a green light as she traveled east on Flatlands Avenue when the collision occurred.

Jefferson's car was broad-sided and members of FDNY's Ladder 170 and Engine 257 had to wrestle the car door off before they could rescue the victim. At first, they brought out the "jaws of life" apparatus to try to cut the car away from the injured man, but they found it would not be necessary. Jefferson was examined by Emergency Medical Service paramedics and it was determined he should be brought to Brookdale Hospital.

Injured driver of Lexus] is gently lifted out of car by firefighter from Ladder Co. 170 and was taken to Brookdale Hospital.
No witnesses saw the accident, but pedestrian and store owners from nearby shops said the collision "sounded like a bomb going off."

"I came running out of my office to see if I could help," said Barry Sussman of ABM Insurance, located on the corner, "but the door was stuck and the injured man couldn't get out."

He said firefighters were at the scene "within minutes" and tore off the door to get the victim.
