As a duly elected state representative, State Senator John Sampson was called to an emergency legislative session in Albany last Thursday, forcing him to miss his annual Grandparents' Seniors Information Day for only the second time in eight years. Last year he was abroad for a funeral.
Traditionally held on East 92nd Street, around the corner from his Flatlands Avenue office, the event offers local elderly residents an opportunity to obtain vital information from various government, civic and health organizations, as well as non-profit groups, that offer specific services to seniors.
As in the past, dozens of seniors took home brochures, pamphlets and souvenirs distributed by the various vendors, got free health check-ups from the Brookdale Hospital Mobile Health Team, and safety tips, plus smoke detectors, from members of New York City's Fire Department's Safety Unit.
Among the nearly two dozen agencies that participated was: Abe Stark Senior Center, NYC Dept. of the Aging, NYC Dept. of Health Services for the Underserved, NYC Fire Department, MTA/NYC Transit, Four Seasons Nursing Home, Millenium Development, American Red Cross, Grandparent Resource Center, ENY Diagnostic Treatment Center and Kings County Hospital Center.
