What better way to interest young members of the Canarsie Adolescent Recreation Program (CARP) than to introduce them to the world of fishing? After all, the facility's grounds are located at 1310 Paerdegat Avenue North - next to the Paerdegat Basin where sea-going vessels are berthed. Officials last week decided, since it was getting close to the opening to school, to take them all out on a fishing trip.
Participants were youngsters from the 69th Precinct Explorers, U.S. Naval Cadets from the New York area and a number of parents and friends, who all climbed aboard the Island Current II.
The youngsters were led by Sergeant Newell Laird and Police Officer Valerie Wilson, both from the 69th Precinct, Naval Cadet Commanding Officer Fernando Morales and CARP President NY Correction Dept. Captain Joseph Betancourt.
"We had a beautiful day," said Betancourt. "We not only had refreshments and lunch for them, but plenty of fish were caught too."

 | | Officials said kids agreed that the water was "just great."
