Local Schools' Opening "Smooth"

Police said there were no specific incidents connected with the opening of the new school season Tuesday.

Sergeant Newell Laird, who heads the school unit for the 69th precinct, echoed other law enforcement sources in the city who reported a smooth first day. Only a few relatively minor problems were encountered, Laird said.

City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, while making a tour of schools in the five boroughs, was quoted as saying opening day was "terrific," noting that registrations, in general, had been going well and that even the buses were running smoothly.
