Want To Get Into Guinness World Records? (StatePoint) As you're reading this, chances are that a Guinness World Record is being broken. Each year more than 50,000 record attempts are submitted to the organization, which has been certifying world records since 1955. Getting into the world's best selling copyright book, which has sold more than 100 million copies to date, is certainly a difficult achievement - but it's not impossible. For starters, you'll need to figure out what record you want to break. The most popular records in-clude such diverse chart toppers as the Tallest Living Man, Largest Pillow Fight, Most Candles on a Cake (it seems the World's Oldest Person should also be able to snag this one) and Largest Game of Leap-frog. "You don't need to be a world class athlete or scholar to make it into the Guinness World Records book," said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guin-ness World Records. "Just this past year we saw records set for the Largest Game of Bingo, the Most People Reading Simultaneously and the Most Cus-tard Pies Thrown in One Minute. And I'm sure there are thousands more new records out there just waiting for someone to dream up." Of course, there are some claims the organization will refuse to consider, such as fattest cat (it's cruel to overfeed pets) or fastest surgery (doctors should take their time and do things right, not fast). If you want to see your name heralded as a world record holder you should first try to follow these basic helpful tips: • Browse through the Guinness World Records 2008 edition for some record-breaking ideas or visit www.guinnessworldrecords.com. • You need to contact Guinness World Records first to let the organization know which record you want to break or which new record you seek to estab-lish. This way you won't waste your time "setting" a record that doesn't satisfy basic record requirements. • Gather the evidence! This is the fun part. Of course, be sure to have a video camera ready to document your attempt at fame and immortality. • You don't need a Guinness World Records official at your attempt, although you can apply for one online if you wish. These men and women travel any time, any place and anywhere in their endless quest for exciting new records. If you do have an official at your attempt, you get the added bonus of receiving your Guinness World Records certificate on the spot - if you actually set one!
