Precinct Crime Stats Are Among Lowest Citywide
By Charles Rogers

69th Pct. COCapt. Monteforte
While the city in general is boasting of statistics released this month that show crime is down from last year by a healthy 6.74 percent, stats for the 69th Precinct, which covers Canarsie, shows a drop in general crime to a whopping 17 percent lower than last year.

An enthusiastic commanding officer of the local precinct, Captain Ralph Monteforte, said this week, meanwhile, that arrests for felony crimes are up, with collars for criminal possession of a weapon up nearly 26 percent and robberies in the community are down by 35.6 percent from last year.

"I'm proud of the way our different units are not only working together, but how their arrests in different areas cross over to the next." He said the Detective Squad has been "relentless" in tracking down career criminals and following up on various cases. In the meantime, patrol officers have been walking and riding in various neighborhoods and working with the community on a number of projects.

Public Service Authority (PSA) officers are doing a "tremendous job," Monteforte said, and narcotics officers - members of the Narcotics Enforcement Unit - have been working together with Brooklyn South narc officers and making what the precinct commander termed "quality arrests."

"I've got to say that some of the input from various members of the community has helped us tremendously in case after case, sometimes telling us about narcotics or guns and sometimes just letting us know if there are 'unusual' things happening in their neighborhood. This is what makes crime statistics go down."
