Summer Storm Wreaks Havoc Here

Aroaring summer storm downed trees, including this one in front of St. Matthews Church on East 92nd Street, and power lines (below) as it passed through the city Wednesday morning leaving drivers, commuters and airline passengers stranded throughout the area. Photos byCharles Rogers
A powerful storm system, peppered with flashes of lightning and roaring thunder, battered the metropolitan area just after dawn on Wednesday. Torrential rains crippled the city's subway system and stranded motorists on flooded roadways as high winds knocked down trees and power lines across the city. At press time, the National Weather Service was investigating reports of a tornado in Bay Ridge. Con Edison crews (left) dispatched to the intersection of Foster Avenue and East 92nd Street yesterday morning worked diligently to repair downed utility lines (at right in photo).
