Emergency Repairs Lead To Canarsie Library Makeover

When the Canarsie Library reopens in the fall, a new chapter will begin for its visitors. Due to emergency repairs, following a partial ceiling collapse last March, the library is undergoing a modernization with an array of new amenities.

The $500,000 project will provide space designated for teens, more comfortable seating, a section with resources for children five and younger, and a service to allow patrons to effortlessly borrow and return books without assistance.

After the ceiling collapse, emergency repairs commenced and included the removal of asbestos in old ceiling materials and the installation of new floors and ceilings.

"As this project progresses, we encourage Canarsie's loyal patrons to visit nearby libraries, including Jamaica Bay, East Flatbush, Paerdegat and Spring Creek libraries," said Ruth Wagner, a spokesperson for the Brooklyn Public Library. "They can also return borrowed materials to any local library."

Former Canarsiens Tom Thompson and Ron Pastor, construction workers for NY Commercial Construction Co. on the site, said, "Come back in about three weeks and see how modernized it's becoming."

A bookmobile service is also available outside the Canarsie Library, at Rockaway Parkway near Avenue J, on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and items can be renewed online at www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org.
