What's Your Opinion?
Compiled by Bill O'Neill

question: Legislation has been proposed to ban the use of plastic bags by supermarkets and other stores because of their danger to the environment. Instead, it has been suggested that shoppers use either recyclable paper bags or buy their own reusable bags. What do you think?

"I think they should still use the plastic bags, even if it might be somewhat hazardous. The reason is that plastic bags are easier to carry than paper bags." - Kashana Sang, Canarsie
"Heck no, it's no good. If you use brown paper bags - and if you have something leaking, the bag will break. The plastic bags, at least it will hold onto whatever is leaking in the bag." - Mary Taylor, East New York
"Yes, I use a tote bag myself or a backpack. I'm fully aware that a plastic bag can end up in the sewer and out in the water. Definitely, it's not a good idea to use plastic bags." - Michael Gorman, Queens
"If it's going to help the environment, why not? They sell those reusable bags for 99 cents at the discount stores to carry groceries. That's what I do. I am an environmentalist. Save the earth - recycle." - Joseph Rivera, Canarsie
