Stiff Penalties For Hydrant Abuse
The New York city Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), reminded New Yorkers this week that the unauthorized opening of fire hydrants is illegal. Open hydrants lower water pressure, cause problems at hospitals and medical facilities and reduce the flow of water needed to fight fires. Opening a hydrant without a spray cap can result in a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both. The DEP pointed out that one illegally open fire hydrant, running full for one minute consumes the same amount of water used to run 400 showers. In one hour it releases enough water to fill an Olmpic-size swimming pool. Hydrant spray caps can be obtained at local police precincts. To report unauthorized open hydrants call 3-1-1.
