Old Mill Basin Residents Balk At Home-Based House Of Worship

Home-like synagogue on East 64th St. has neighbors upset.
Some homeowners in the Old Mill Basin area have complained that a synagogue has recently been located in a private home on East 64th Street and it is affecting their quality of life.

Last week, News 12 Brooklyn received a faxed letter from some of the residents complaining about how traffic congestion and double parking have become a problem since the Mill Basin Sephardic Congregation, located between Strickland Avenue and Avenue U, has affected their "quality of life, which has dropped dramatically."

City Councilman Lew Fidler, commenting on the subject, said the "changing demographics" in the section determine that there are many churches of all denominations being located in the community, and that there is no law that says converting houses into churches is illegal.

"As we look into the situation, I'm sure we can come to a reasonable compromise," he said.

Members of the congregation told News 12 they are not causing any problems, they are aware of the traffic congestion and for that reason they have been using car pools to facilitate their congregants.
