Former Brooklyn Dodgers hurler Ralph Branca was a special guest Tuesday morning to help unveil a student-designed mural, at Meyer Levin Intermediate School 285, inspired by baseball and Dodger legend Jackie Robinson.

The event at the Beverly Road school was held in conjunction with the upcoming debut of an HBO special, "Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush," which premieres July 11 and chronicles the beloved Dodgers before they left Brooklyn for the West Coast 50 years ago.

Students Kervins Eliazar, Tyra Facey, Imani Hamilton, Alicia Hodge, Christopher Jones, Jerome Kelly, Kelly Stewart, Shirley Ann Francois and Geraldy Mondesir designed and painted the mural over a four-week period on two adjacent walls in the school's basement cafeteria. The students got the idea for the wall painting when they learned of the influence Robinson had as the first black man to play in the major leagues and his subsequent efforts to break down barriers in a segregated society. Teachers Candise Cox, Dustin Brumit and Denise Holder supervised them.

Branca said he accepted and befriended Robinso and had no second thoughts about having a black teammate. "I was his friend from the get-go," he told the Courier.

Pitching in relief on the final game of the 1951 season, the right-handed Branca threw the pitch to Bobby Thompson that became known as "the shot heard 'round the world," which propelled the New York Giants into the 1951 World Series and extended the Dodgers streak of bad luck that finally ended when they defeated the Yankees in seven games in the 1955 World Series.
