Red Cross Worker Reminds Local Residents About Disaster Readiness
Matthew Khaled, coordinator of Preparedness Training for the American Red Cross of Greater New York, was the featured speaker at last week's Informed Voices Civic Association meeting in the auditorium of St Jude's school. Since Canarsie was one of several NYC communities recently spotlighted as a possible flood zone during severe hurricanes, Khaled gave them recommendations on how to prepare for such emergencies as fires and floods. Out of almost 1,000 emergencies received by the Red Cross in the last year, Khaled noted, most of them were house fires. During emergencies, he suggested residents select an outdoor meeting place for family members, know exit routes, make copies of all family telephone numbers and have cell phone batteries charged. He also explained that they should have an out-of-town contact because during disasters when local circuits are busy it is probably easier to reach someone in another state. He also mentioned preparing a "go bag" with important documents, a First-Aid kit, some cash, keys, water (one gallon per person, per day), non-perishable foods, a flashlight, and backed up computer information. USB flash drives are currently the most convenient way to backup important computer information, according to Khaled. For more information visit www.nyredcross.org. Another speaker, Lt. Dennis Ferber, said that the 69th precinct receives about 50-60 noise complaints from residents concerning loud parties on weekends. He explained that "sound replicating devices," such as loud speakers and turntables, are illegal outdoors. "Usually the first warning is to have your music turned off," explained Ferber. "If we get more than one complaint, we start issuing summonses and take your equipment."
