Fallen Firefighter's Grandpa Says He Was A "Real Athlete"
Saying he would be attending the funeral of Daniel Pujdak the following day, Stanley Lowicki, 80, a Starrett City resident, decided to stop by the Canarsie Courier on Monday to reminisce about his grandson. "We were all proud of him," said Lowicki, a retired fisherman. "Did you know he was a real athlete? He loved to pitch baseball. He was some pitcher!" Remarking how much Pujdak wanted to be a "fireman" all his life, Lowicki said, "there was no one who wanted to do that job more than he did, though." The young man was a member of Ladder Co. 146, which had responded to the smoky fire on Meserole Street. According to some reports, last Thursday's blaze started as a result of a carelessly discarded cigarette. The sad grandfather said he didn't want to "second guess" anyone, but he felt the firefighter should not have been up that high, especially since he had been with the department only 18 months. "You can figure a 'roof man' would usually be one who's more experienced," he said. "But maybe Daniel was so good at his job that they let him do it - even if he was carrying a hundred pounds of extra stuff on his back." According to Lowicki, a "roof man" cuts holes in the roof to vent the smoke in a fire.
