Common Ground Revives Plans For Local Low-Income Housing Units
David Beer, Common Ground's director of housing development, wrote a letter to Community Board 18 officials, obtained by the Canarsie Courier , indicating that the Christian Cultural Center is partnering with his organization to develop affordable and moderate-income housing for families. The project would include the development of seven multi-family buildings consisting of 89 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. "The new proposal is going to be very different from the original," said Beer, who did not reveal specific reasons for resurrecting the project. Beer said the new plan calls for a community center and 63 homeownership units. Common Ground will bring the proposal to the Community Board in September. The previous proposal included three buildings with units for senior citizens and persons eligible for SSI and Medicaid. Local opponents believed that the development was going to be a homeless shelter, but Common Ground denied that concept before local civic associations and elected officials, insisting it would be housing for formerly homeless low-income families.
