Court was in session at Isaac Bildersee Intermediate School 68 last Friday morning when two sixth grade classes engaged in a mock trial competition, demonstrating their newly acquired knowledge of the court system learned through a unique school program.

The mock trial, held in the middle school's auditorium, centered on an alleged robbery. Students from classes 161 and 164 competed to determine which group was more skillful. The "trial's" defendant was charged with first-degree robbery and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

"Class 161 won the competition," said Assistant Principal Ikhlas Abdullah. "The students' personalities really came through and the way they acted made us believe a trial was really occurring. They also remembered their parts and that resulted in a better representation of the legal system."

Components of actual court proceedings included prosecutors and defense attorneys questioning witnesses, such as police officers, and the responsibility of a jury.

At the closing of one trial, the suspect - found guilty by the jury - was taken away by the court police officer.

The Academy of Entrepreneurship and Law at the East 82 Street school has collaborated with the officials of the Brooklyn District Attorney's office to develop a unique program, which helps students gain an understanding of the legal system. The program also focuses on court procedures.

According to school officials, Assistant District Attorney John O'Mara has helped students from the Academy develop a better understanding of legal issues and court cases.

"In my five years here, this mock trial was by far one of the best academic presentations I've experienced," said principal Alex Fralin. "Students from both classes demonstrated great poise, confidence and articulated their roles with excellence. I am proud of all of them. I also appreciate the hard work of the Brooklyn District Attorney's office which worked tirelessly with our students to provide them with a great learning experience."
