PSC Offers Tips For New Yorkers To Save Energy
Saving energy is cool.

With the hot, steamy temperatures of summer soon upon us, New York's electric grid will be placed under greater stress. The New York State Public Service Commission urges consumers to be cool by doing their part to become smart energy users.

This summer, New Yorkers can reduce their energy use, help the environment, be more energy efficient, help ensure reliability of the electric system and save money by following these simple tips:

+Using fans more and air conditioners less will create gentle breezes to keep you and your family comfortable, while reducing electricity bills.

+Use a programmable thermostat and set the temperature to 78 degrees F. You can save 3 percent on your energy costs for each degree you turn it up.

+ Switch to energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFL). For each CFL you use, you avoid more than 80 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions every year. If every household in the United States just switched one bulb to a CFL, it would be the global warming equivalent of taking 800,000 cars off the road.

+Choose energy-efficient ENERGY STAR® products when buying new appliances and save money on your electric bill.

+Switch off electronics - or unplug them when not in use to eliminate phantom energy loss. Even in stand-by mode, electricity is being used.

+According to the World Wildlife Federation, turning off your computer monitor at the end of the day keeps about 950 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere every year.

+Install insulation, the most important year-round energy saver, and save up to 30 percent of your cooling costs.

+By running your major household appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, etc.) early in the morning, after 7 p.m. or on weekends, you'll place less of a strain on New York's energy supply.

+Ovens heat up the kitchen and make your cooling system and refrigerator work harder. Cook food outside over the grill or inside with a microwave. Microwaves use less than half the power of a conventional oven and cook food in about 25 percent of the time.

+Close blinds or shades facing the sun, and take advantage of natural ventilation, especially during cool morning or evening hours.

+Save energy dollars by taking shorter showers or using an energy efficient, low-flow showerhead.

Remember, using less energy during the summer months helps protect our environment and can save you money. For more energy saving tips, visit AskPSC.com or call 1-888-Ask-PSC1
