Student Becomes Precinct C.O. (For A Day)
When you dress like a big shot, you feel and act like a big shot; when you dress like a movie star, you feel and act like a movie star. By the same token, when you dress like a police precinct commander, you feel and act like a police precinct commander. That's why the moment the Police Athletic League's choice for the 69th Precinct's Commander for a Day - 16-year-old Mariah Spence - donned the hat of Captain Ralph Monteforte and figuratively took the reins of command here - just for a day, of course. The Van Buren High School student, who is also a member of the 69th Precinct Explorers group, was assigned to her post during an elaborate swearing-in ceremony by Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau at One Police Plaza on Wednesday, June 6. After the ceremony, during which a student police commissioner and a commander for each precinct in the five boroughs was chosen, as well as borough commanders and deputy commissioners, the students proceeded to their posts. "Captain" Spence met Captain Monteforte, toured the Foster Avenue station house, reviewed various procedures and duty rosters and even helped assign the day's police activities.
