More than 60 firefighters responded to a smoky fire that apparently started in a basement wall in a three-story brick house on East 83rd Street Friday.

According to Firefighter Craig Mo-sin, a Fire Department spokesman, Can-arsie's Engine Co. 257, Ladder Co. 170 and Battalion 58, along with rigs from neighboring communities, were called to the scene, located just south of Flatlands Avenue, at 11:46 a.m. and, at 11:54, the blaze was declared an "all hands" fire, with at least 12 companies responding.

Mosin said no one was hurt and officials at the site declared the fire under control at 12:08 a.m. Eastbound traffic on Flatlands Avenue at East 83rd Street had to circumvent the area for a short while, with 69th Precinct police directing it, because of the amount of Fire Department equipment.

Neighbors first called 911 to report the fire, saying that they saw smoke coming from the first floor of the brick house, but it was later determined the fire centered in the basement. Fire-fighters said at the time they thought it originated with faulty wiring, but they said that was only speculation until fire marshals could check it. They did say that it did not appear to be suspicious.
