Cultures Connect At P.S. 279 International Festival

Three years ago, the students and administration officials of P.S. 279 began a tradition that would show their parents, teachers, peers and others that those negative issues like intolerance and a lack of brotherhood is a thing of the past. They organized a celebration they called "Multicultural International Day," where they would celebrate the various cultures of countries around the world.

Organized and led by the school's principal, Dr. Lena Richardson, the festival featured costumes, artifacts, music and dances derivative of many countries. Of course, the agenda for the event featured plenty of food, too.

The proceedings started with a parade led by the Marching Band from Midwood High School, with contributions from the school's PTA, plus various teachers and coordinators.

It was easy to see that the youngsters worked hard on international projects, with many of them wearing clothing culturally indicative of their own roots. Charles Rogers
