Residents of the Breukelen and BayView housing projects no longer have to wait for their own PSA-1 - Police Service Authority - officers, with headquarters in Coney Island, to respond to emergencies.

Captain Ralph Monteforte, commanding officer of the 69th Precinct, announced at last month's community council meeting that PSA 1 officers will now be dispatched from their own "satellite" office opposite East 106th Street in the Breukelen Houses complex in northern Canarsie.

The current headquarters, on West 23rd Street, patrols developments within the 60th, 61st, 63rd and 69th precincts. Now, 18 PSA 1 officers will be assigned and dispatched from their office here, Monteforte said.

"Silvia Whiteside, president of the BayView Houses Tenants Association, kept pushing for a satellite station closer to Canarsie," said Monteforte. BayView is another housing development here, located about two miles south of Breukelen.

Captain Monteforte also honored Police Officer Frank Gonzales (right).
"It took anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes for officers to get here from Coney Island and that response time is crucial," the commander said. "So we worked with PSA 1 to establish the station in the Breukelen Houses. Between the 69th Precinct officers and housing police, there will be a higher level of security in the community."

PSA 1 Captain John Denesopolis said, "Establishing the high tech police service room at the Breukelen Houses was a necessity. There were 12 shootings in the last year around the complex and the police commissioner approved of the location."

During the meeting, which took place at St. Alban's Church, Monteforte also presented Cop Of The Month awards to Police Officers Frank Gonzalez and Tara King for combating graffiti.

"Officer Gonzalez has been working in South Shore High School for ten years now and he's the backbone of the school," Monteforte said. "He locked up two students on two different occasions. Some graffiti within the school is gang related and Gonzalez is out there every day making the environment safer for our kids.

"Officer King has been out on patrol - especially watching the wall at Conklin Avenue and Rockaway Parkway, where we've painted over graffiti many times. King stakes out certain locations where there tends to be a lot of graffiti and makes sure the buildings stay clean," he added.
