More than a dozen NYPD vehicles (see photo below), including an elaborate technical Hostage Negotiating Team command post, were lined up and put to use at about 9 a.m. Tuesday when an apparently emotionally disturbed man engaged in a standoff in a basement apartment of a home at the corner of East 84th Street and Avenue L.

Police from the 69th Precinct were originally called to the scene by friends and family of the man, whose name was not released, when he started arguing with them and eventually locked himself in the bathroom of the apartment.

Following standard procedure, the NYPD's Emergency Service Units (SWAT teams) were called in case the man had a weapon. By about noon, after negotiators talked with him through the bathroom door, he came out unharmed.

He was taken to Kings County Hospital for observation.
