Coeds Earn CHS Class Of 2007's Top Honors
Principal David Harris recently announced that Stephanie Melo and Samira Kassim, were, respectively named the valedictorian and salutatorian of the Canarsie High School Class of 2007. Melo, daughter of Margarita Baez and Vicente Melo, is a Brooklyn native with two younger siblings. She currently holds a 95.0 grade point average, after enduring tedious Advanced Place-ment courses in American History, government, English, calculus, chemistry and Spanish. During her high school years, Melo participated in various extracurricular activities such as Stage Management, Global Kids' Newzcrew, Arista/Archon National Honors Society, monitoring for teachers, Multicultural Festival, tutoring and being involved in various charity drives and fundraisers. In her spare time the coed likes to spend time with her family and friends, dancing and surfing the Internet. Melo's ambition is to become an accountant, Human Resources manager and a Computer Science technician. She intends on beginning Pace Uni-versity in Manhattan this fall to pursue a degree in Accounting and Business Management. Melo noted, "I am truly honored to represent the best of Canarsie High School, kids that have put a great deal of effort into getting this far." Kassim, also a Brooklyn native, is the seventh of eight children of Yasmin Alibocas and Ali Kassim. She currently holds a 94.12 grade point average and has taken several Advanced Place-ment courses. She has participated in tutoring, mentoring and Arista/ Archon National Honors Society at the school and volunteered at the Brighton Beach Neighborhood Association. In her spare time Kassim socializes with friends and family. Kassim hopes to become a physician assistant and begins her college education this fall at St. John's University. She summed up her final high school tribute, by stating, "I feel like my hard work has paid off, and I am honored to be chosen salutatorian to represent the graduating class of 2007."
