Our Memorial Day Parade Follows Long Tradition Following a decades-long tradition, Canarsie's Memorial Day ceremonies, sponsored by the American Legion Canarsie Post 573, will consist of three parts again this year: At 10 a.m. there will be a memorial service at the Canarsie Veterans Circle at the foot of Rockaway Parkway where wreaths will be laid, a few very short speeches and a gun salute. Also at 10 a.m., there will be a memorial ceremony at Canarsie Cemetery sponsored by the United States Street Veterans and hosted by Vietnam Veterans activist Thomas F. Betz. Betz invites all veterans to join him in the ceremony. At 10:40 a.m., there will be another memorial service at Canarsie Cemetery. A wreath will be laid at the Civil War Monument, "Taps" will be played and, once again, there will be a gun salute. At 11:15 a.m. marchers for the parade will line up at the American Legion Hall at East 92nd Street and Conklin Avenue and the parade will start at 11:30 a.m. sharp. The route for the parade will be east on Conklin Avenue to Rockaway Parkway, south on Rockaway Parkway to Avenue M, west on Avenue M to P.S. 115 (at the corner of East 92nd Street). The marchers will pause briefly at the school for a moment of silence in honor of the various memorials for World War I soldiers on the school grounds. The parade will proceed to Remsen Avenue, turn north to Avenue K and stop for another moment of silence. It will then continue north to Conklin Avenue back to the Legion Hall. There will be another brief service and the rendering of honors at the Legion monument on East 92nd Street. Charles Rogers
