Youth Shoots Himself In The Leg While Putting Gun In Pocket: Cops
By Charles Rogers

Police from the 69th Precinct were called to Brookdale Hospital at about 5 a.m. Saturday to interview a 16-year-old resident of Schenck Street who told doctors in the emergency room he had been shot in the leg by an unknown person. During the interview, the youth, whose name was not released, told cops he had been walking near the BayView Houses in southern Canarsie when a shot rang out and he felt a stinging to his right leg.

While conducting the interview, however, the teenager's clothing was inspected, according to a filed report, and it was discovered that he had a hole in the right pocket of his pants, suggesting a round of ammunition had penetrated it from the inside. Further inspection determined there appeared to be gunpowder residue within the pocket. Detectives said 911 calls re-garding the shot being fired came from the 75th Precinct area east of Canarsie, and not in the BayView Houses section.

The youth was brought to the 69th Precinct station house and, detectives said, later confessed that the wound was self-inflicted and went off while he was putting the gun in his pocket. He was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and filing a false report.
