Question: The average food stamp allotment for one person is said to be about $28 per week. Could you live on that amount - and for how long?

"No way could I live on that. I'm single. I'll spend $10 on lunch alone - some days especially. A lot of times I'm dining out. If I was cooking at home, I could stretch it a little more. But $28 would only last about two or three days." - Herbert Smith, Canarsie
"I definitely could not live on $28 per week. I mean, the cost of living is going up. For a single individual, $28 is barely enough for a day. And you can't get anything nutritional. Can't get hot food." - Daniel Ortiz, Canarsie
"No, seriously, definitely not - could not live on $28 per week. It would last about two or three days. They should have about two times that amount for a single individual." - Khalia Hollinswood, Canarsie
"No, you can't live on that. Twenty eight dollars can't buy enough for one day - never mind a week. The average child gets that as an allowance for a week. It's ridiculous!" - Barbara Russell, Canarsie
