Local Parks Host Mayor's Cup Cricket Tournament

It's batsman up in cricket action at Canarsie Park last weekend.
The Brooklyn leg of the Inaugural Mayor's Cup Cricket Tournament bowled off over the weekend at several city parks, including Canarsie and Marine parks in this community. At Marine Park four teams competed for the honor of representing the borough in a subsequent competition, which follows a knockout format.

When the New York Parks Department had finished setting up tent, and umpires Steve Kalloo and Vernon Nesfield were finished with field preparation, teams already selected, it was time for the games to begin.

The first game, which started 45 minutes late, featured Team 1, Pakistan Cricket Clubs, a combination of Travel Treat, Punjab and Pak Eleven, which took on Team 2, a combination of St. Lucia, Cavaliers and Diplomats cricket clubs.

Team 1's captain, Mohammad Hussain, elected to bat first after winning the toss, amassing 177 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. Babar Choudhry, who was run out off the last ball, top scored with 75, while Qasim Jarad chipped in with a valuable 46.

W. Celestin was the peak of the bowlers for Team 2 taking 2 for 26 in his four overs. He got assistance from T. Florence with 2 for 39 and D. Audain, the most economical bowler with 1 for 14 from 4.

Team 2 responded positively at their turn at the wicket with 179 for 6 getting the total with 14 balls to spare. A whirlwind 53 from opener J. Emmanuel of St Lucia Cricket club opened the proceeding with further contributions coming from C. Charles with 24 not out, D. Audain, 24, and W. Stuger 14, M. Hussain taking 2 for 33.

The second game saw Team 3 - a combination of Grenada, Stars United and Victory cricket clubs - do battle with Team 4 - Carriacou United, Imperial and Brooklyn Panthers, combined.

Batting first, Team 3 scored a massive 188 for 7, G. Anthony, 55; R. Murray, 37 and L. Douglas 24, K. Payne getting 3 for 33. In their reply, Team 4 after getting a 63 form the opening pair was only able to reach 96 before they were bowled out in the 15th over. F. Lewis top scored with 43, while C. Alexander chipped in with 18. A. Shah was the leading bowler taking 5 for 12 from 4.

The competition continues Saturday, when this week's winning teams will do battle for the right to represent the Brooklyn League in the semifinals of the competition. The game will be played at Marine Park Ground C.
