P.S. 233 hosted its second Family Literacy Night on April 26. The event was facilitated by teachers Howard Goldberg and Janice Sydney Smith, and attended by 60 second- and third-grade students and their parents. In addition to offering students and parents an opportunity to enjoy literacy activities together, Family Literacy Night provides parents a host of ideas and materials for helping their children read and comprehend nonfiction texts at home.
The theme was, The More You Read, the More You Know . Pearl Wolkin, the school's librarian, kicked-off the event with a read- and sing-along of an original poem, followed by a game she created called, Nonfiction Text Feature Jeopardy . Students and parents then explored five literacy workstations manned by fourteen volunteers including teachers, paraprofessionals and parents.
Books from P.S. 233's Parent Lending Library were available to be borrowed by all attendees. Reading games and other prizes were raffled and a free book was given to each child at the close of the evening.
