In an effort to promote dialogue and raise awareness of various issues, Public School 276 students and administrators hosted a special legislative breakfast on Friday, April 27.

The breakfast, which took place in the school's library, was comprised of presentations by students and a question and answer session for guests, including Reeves Eisen from Councilman Lew Fidler's office; Rosemary Stuart, Deputy Superintendent of Region Six; Bernie Tessler, Chief Executive Officer with the children's services organization Oasis; and Sam Pierre who represented Congressman Ed Towns.

During the round table discussion, attendees became better acquainted with each other and created a forum about the future of education. One of the issues discussed was portable classrooms. While students expressed they wanted these classrooms removed completely, principal Jonathan Straughn wants upgrading of classroom space so students do not have to be relocated during school hours.

Student participation included a book reading from 10- year-old Ashley Maule (standing, left) who read from a book she wrote and illustrated. Principal Jonathan Straughn looks on.
"These facilities have a life expectancy of seven years, but they have been standing for over ten years," he said.

Stuart did not say when or if the portable classrooms would be eliminated in the immediate future, but that their purpose is to "alleviate overcrowding with increased enrollment."

Students asked Eisen how they could reach out to more elected officials for additional support.

"By having meetings like this on a regular basis and inviting as many community leaders to attend as you can is a good start," said Eisen, who accepted a special "thank you" gift on behalf of the councilman.

Assistant Principal Leslyn Ward said this was the first of many meetings the school will host with various community leaders.

Deputy Superintendent Rosemary Stewart answered questions.
