Earth Day Volunteers Clean Up Plumb Beach

Volunteers arrive for a good day's work.
Volunteers from the American Littoral Society were joined by other volunteers and members of the National Park Service, NYC Department of Environmental Preservation (DEP), the Audubon Society and many other groups Sunday to help clean up Plumb Beach of timbers and floatable debris.

When the junk was removed, Gateway National Recreation Area workers planted shadbush and other shrubs, plus several hundred culms of beach grass. Officials said the project will continue through the end of the week.

"Groups or individuals are welcome to join us," said Don Riepe. For information, call 1-718-318-9344. Photos by Barry Fischer
