Summer Youth Job Program Applications Now Available

The Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) has released applications for the 2007 New York City Summer Youth Employ-ment Program (SYEP). The applications can be found on the DYCD Web Site at nyc.gov/dycd. This marks the first year that young people can apply online. Hard copies of the ap-plication and instructions can also be downloaded for printing.

The deadline to submit a completed application will be May 18, 2007.

SYEP is a seven-week program that will run from July 2 through August 18, 2007. Last year, approximately 41,650 youth were enrolled in SYEP. Participants work up to 25 hours a week while earning $7.15 per hour in assignments at government agencies, hospitals, summer camps, nonprofits, small businesses, law firms, museums, as well as in sports and retail organizations.

All New York City residents be-tween the ages of 14 and 21 are eligible to apply.

In keeping with their objective to provide an employment experience that emphasizes real-world labor expectations, DYCD has successfully expanded the number of private sector jobs. SYEP not only provides New York City youth with summer employment, it also incorporates educational experiences that build on their individual strengths.

These principles include engaging the talents and interests of youth, developing their skills and competen-cies, and providing positive adult role models.

The program also teaches financial literacy skills, including how to utilize banks, manage their earnings and save for the future.
