State Treasury Holds Billions In Unclaimed Funds: Weiner The New York State treasury is sitting on $7.5 billion dollars in unclaimed funds, and most residents don't even know it. Democratic Con-gressman Anthony Weiner, whose Brooklyn/Queens district includes parts of Canarsie, encourages his constituents to contact the state to see if they're entitled to a share of the available pot. Between 2005 and 2006, more than $150 million in unclaimed funds was paid out to more than 220,000 New Yorkers. Yet, billions more go unclaimed each year, including a $1.7 million account - the single largest amount held by the treasury. The funds come from inactive accounts that are turned over to the state by banks, utilities, insurance companies and other businesses. If a constituent can prove that he or she is an owner of one of these inactive funds, the state will refund it free of charge. "New Yorkers work hard for their money and should get what's rightfully theirs," Weiner said. "A five minute phone call could mean a few hundred dollars." To inquire about unclaimed funds, call 1-800-221-9311 or 1-518-270-2200 Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m or go to www.osc.state.ny.us.
