Victim In Breukelen Houses Shooting Dies Of His Wound When police catch the unknown fugitive from a shooting on March 22 at Breukelen Houses, they'll charge the shooter with at least an additional count of homicide because, a week after being hospitalized after being shot, the victim has died, according to police. Detectives from the 69th Precinct said Gary Thornton, 23, a resident of the housing complex at 108-39 Flatlands Avenue passed away shortly after midnight on March 29 due to the wounds received that night, according to Dr. Jed Webb of Brookdale Hospital. Thornton was shot once in the chest, medical technicians said, and the bullet exited out the victim's lower back. At the time, authorities said they felt the wound was not life threatening, although he was listed in "guarded" condition. The victim had been talking with some friends in front of his house near the corner of Flatlands Avenue and East 108th Street when a man wearing a dark hooded sweater came up to them, pulled a handgun from under his sweater and started shooting into the group. Witnesses told cops they heard about nine shots and saw the shooter run across the front lawn and jump into a waiting SUV, which sped west. The following morning, at least nine shell casings and other ballistics evidence could be found by Emergency Service Unit police and local officers and detectives. Anyone with information of the case is asked to call then detectives at (718) 257-6215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential. Charles Rogers
