This Week In Canarsie...1984 Remember how you couldn't wait to rent your favorite movie on VHS tape in the 1980s? We remember - because stores all over the community were advertising with us when it came to their hot rental deals! Video rental stores like Night At The Movies on Avenue L offered some awesome yearly memberships (for as little as $29.95 for five years) and they repaired your VCRs! TC Video, located on Remsen Avenue, repaired and rented out tons of video games and the latest movies. Some of the hottest movies they had to rent were "Mr. Mom," "Staying Alive," and Michael Jackson's "Thriller." Thanks to good old cable television and satellite, you'll need luck finding a mom and pop store to rent a video from now!… We still wanted to capture the rich history of Canarsie in every issue - and at that time, the Canarsie Historical Society was substantially active. As a matter of fact, the organization met on the third Tuesday of every month at the Green Point Savings Bank. President of the Canarsie Historical Society at the time was Ben DuBose - who wrote a column called " Keyhole to History ." This fascinating feature looked back on historical events that took place in New York. The Canarsie Historical Society also honored historian John Denton that week, naming him man of the year for his dedication and inspiration to Canarsie's history. Still alive at the time, Denton was writing his heart out about old families and streets in Canarsie. While he passed away the following year at 80 years old, we continue to publish his column and keep the history of our fine little community alive… One thing you won't see in our publication anymore is a section called "Auto News And Notes." If you wanted to keep your car up to speed - we published all the tips you needed. In those days, there were tons of local automotive shops that advertised with us - including AllCar Rent-A-Car, which was located on Ralph Avenue, and Big D Auto Parts on Rockaway Parkway. We got your engines going with lots of special coupons and deals! Ah, those were the good old days!… Constituents in the community presently know Lew Fidler as their City Councilman, but 23 years ago he was also advocating for residents - as chairperson of Community Board 17! That week we announced Fidler received correspondence from a city agency which promised to reallocate funds to needed day care programs. While Fidler was serving his second term as chairman, he made securing day funding a personal priority. As Councilman, Fidler still gets things done. Thanks to him, over $5 million in funds have been secured so that residents in and around Canarsie can soon enjoy a new, modernized, safer and more enjoyable Canarsie Park…
