P.S. 115 Students Help Peers In Zimbabwe
With numerous donations from the school community and generous contributions from families of students, they recently collected scores of items, like clothing, shoes, books, toys, sports equipment, makeup and dishes, which were boxed and shipped to the landlocked African nation. Jenny Moldavan and her class embraced the program and not only collected the various donations, but packed them in boxes, too. Under the supervision of Cathy Williams and Lawrence Bernstein, students accumulated a truckload of items that were recently sent to students and teachers of the impoverished country that was once the British colony of Rhodesia. The program, Adopt a School in Zimbabwe, was started a few years ago by retired teacher Mark Garshow and his wife, Sheri Saltzberg, after they went to Zambia, which borders Zimbabwe, for a wedding. As a result, they organized the U.S.-Africa Children's Fellowship to allow poor children to receive a proper education. More than 150,000 books have already been shipped overseas thanks to the Park Slope couple. Their program now boasts 36 local schools. In addition to P.S. 115, other Brooklyn schools that contribute include Lincoln High School, Garshow's alma mater, as well as Midwood, John Jay and Brooklyn Technical high schools.
