This Week In Canarsie...1994
…Firefighters from Engine Company 257 and Ladder Company 170 had their hands full that week when they had to battle two fires in one day - one in Canarsie at Flatlands Fifth Street and the other in Georgetown at East 69 Street and Avenue L, where four firefighters were injured. Acting Battalion 58 Chief McCardle said the fire seemed suspicious because of the amount of fire that was present at both scenes… ...We also reported on a tragic accident that occurred on East 101 Street, where a five year old was hit by a car while walking to P.S. 279. There was no crossing guard at the site - which had been the case for several years on that block. Evidently, the driver lived a few doors away from the boy and was issued a summons for failing to yield the right of way... ...One of our loyal advertisers, Sonny's Heros, made a big announcement in our paper that week. Their irresistible sandwiches would come back to Canarsie at 1031 East 92 Street and their grand opening specials were unbeatable. Sonny's offered a free can of soda with every sandwich and a free cup of coffee with every breakfast order. Sonny's full page ad made it clear that "You haven't had a hero until you've had a Sonny's hero!" Sonny's is still located at East 92 Street, they're still advertising with us and still serving up the most hearty sandwiches around. And they even do catering!... …Back in '94 we were still offering people a plug to express how they felt for their loved ones with our full page of Valentine's Day greetings - except in those days we called the page of dedication "Valentine's Day Heart of Hearts." The lavish display of affection came from all different people and we tagged on "I Love You," "Be Mine," and "Coupon: Good For One Kiss" to the top off those sentimental messages! We've kept the tradition going - we still run a full page filled with love notes and mushy messages. This year, we called the proclamation of love page simply: "Valentine's Greetings."
