I.S. 285 Wired For Visit From Successful Former Student

Hector in character as gang leader in HBO series, "The Wire."
Meyer Levin I.S. 285 alumnus Jamie Hector, who portrays a cunning gang leader on the critically-acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning HBO police drama series, "The Wire," visited his former school last month to speak with 6th, 7th and 8th grade drama students about performing in theater, television and film.

Hector, whose ruthless "Wire" character, Marlo Stanfield, leads a street gang in one of West Baltimore's toughest neighborhoods, came back to the place where he started to learn his craft as Meyer Levin offers one of the city's schools most comprehensive arts program.

A 1989 I.S. 285 graduate, Hector was contacted, through his agent Ally Robeson, by his former English teacher, Eddie Gentile, who has been the school's principal for the last 29 years. It was Gentile who brought the arts program to Meyer Levin in 1978.

Gentile arranged to have students from the three grades gather for an informal discussion with Hector, who has established a large fan base due to his riveting performance on "The Wire," about careers in acting, technique, resumes, and headshots. At the end of his presentation, students, who appeared captivated for the two hours he was there, had an opportunity to ask the actor about his career for which Hector commended them for insightful, sophisticated questions.

After high school Hector enrolled in college while he continued to audition and appeared on such series as "NY Undercover," "Third Watch," "Law & Order," "Law & Order SVU" and "Oz," among others. Following college graduation, he enrolled in the The Lee Strasburg Theater Institute, where he studied for several years.

The talented actor, whose appeal, the principal said, is due to his sincere humanity and modesty, promised Gentile he would at some point to address a new group of aspiring thespians.

Meyer Levin Intermediate School has earned a marked reputation for its outstanding arts programs, which includes dance, drama, vocal music and costume design.
