Region 6 Official Discusses Changes For South Shore & Tilden High Schools Regional Instructional Deputy Superintendent from Region Six Rosemary Stuart spoke to residents about the new small schools set to open when Tilden and South Shore high schools are phased out in 2009 at last week's 69 Precinct Community Council meeting. According to Stuart, the new schools would increase the graduation rate from 60 to 80 percent. "There are going to be two campuses at Tilden High School and four campuses at South Shore," she said. "Since those schools will no longer take students for the ninth grade classes, it will allow the new schools to come into place and we're hoping the programs available will be attractive to community students." The new schools scheduled at the Tilden Educational Campus are "It Takes A Village Academy," which will serve non-English speaking students, and the Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School, which will focus on teaching students survival skills in the outdoors, as well as implement problem solving skills in hostile environments. The four South Shore schools are the Victory Collegiate High School, the Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School, the Brooklyn Generation School and the Brooklyn Bridge Academy. Stuart said that principals at the new schools will be selected in a different manner than the current process. She also noted that that the sports program at South Shore is something "they need to maintain at that campus." Junior high school students will still be able apply to South Shore and Tilden high schools, but twenty new citywide schools will be added to the selection, which students can include on their applications. One parent asked what took the Department of Education so long to develop these smaller schools to replace the ones that are currently failing. "The department has been doing these types of things in other communities for years," Stuart said. "They needed to see what works and what doesn't. Since the smaller school systems have worked in other communities, they're a different approach will improve conditions" at South Shore and Tilden.
