Weiner Report Reveals Most City Sex Offenders Live In Brooklyn
By Neil S. Friedman

Weiner and Towns at Sunday press conference reveal city's sex offenders live too close to our city's public schools.
Brooklyn, once known as the

borough of churches and home of the beloved, but perennial losing Dodgers major league baseball team, now has a distinction for which it is certainly not proud.

At a Sunday news conference held at City Hall in Manhattan, congressmen Anthony Weiner and Ed Towns released an exhaustive examination of where sex offenders live in New York City, which revealed that Brooklyn has more than any other borough and nearly a third of them citywide have taken up residence near elementary or middle schools.

Weiner's account shows that 670 - or 32 percent - of the city's 2,114 worst sex offenders live within two blocks of a school.

In a breakdown of the statistics for three local communities, Weiner found that in the 11236 zip code, which en-compasses Canarsie, a total of 17 sex offenders reside with four living within two blocks of a public school and 13 within five blocks. In zip code 11234, of ten sex offenders, half live within five blocks and two within two blocks of schools. In 11203, northwest of Canarsie, there are 26 reported sex offenders, who all live within five blocks of a school, while two reside within two blocks of a city school.

Weiner, whose district covers parts of southern Brooklyn and Queens, and Towns, who represents many Canarsiens, also announced they would introduce legislation that would expand the city's ability to track sex offenders by im-proving the online sex offender registry, cracking down on those who violate parole and through investments in GPS technology.

"Many sex offenders who have a predilection of preying on children live within a stone's throw of neighborhood schoolyards," Weiner said. "It's simply dumbfounding."

New York State currently has no law that restricts where a sex offender may live.

The report by Weiner's office matches addresses from the state's sex offender registry with maps from the Library of Congress. It focuses on Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders.

The study shows that 671 sex offenders live in Brooklyn while 500 live in the Bronx, 428 in Queens, 420 in Manhattan and 95 on Staten Island.
