This Week In Canarsie...1991
...Some residents showing support for troops in the Middle East were perturbed to find that their acts of patriotism were seemingly unappreciated. An elaborate flag, which was adorned outside the Joann and Rocco Esposito residence was stolen. "One day it was flying in the wind and we were so proud of it. The next morning it was gone." While police investigated the incident, community affairs officers with the 69th Precinct hadn't received reports from any other residents about stolen flags... ...We encouraged the community to show their support for the troops by publishing army addresses where service members could be reached if you wanted to send a small package overseas. If you wanted to donate blood - we provided the phone numbers. We invited everyone, from friends and family to Canarsiens who simply wanted to express their gratefulness to those participating in Operation Desert Storm, to send a contribution... ...During that time, just about every local civic organization held a ceremony honoring our troops. Firefighters from Ladder Co. 170 and Engine Co. 257, 69th Precinct police officers, public schools and elected officials held rallies. We also published many elaborate public displays of flags, ribbons, signs and other patriotic trimmings. | |||||
