This Week In Canarsie...1987 Many Canarsiens, disgruntled about service provided by our local post office at East 102 Street and Flatlands Avenue, might have applauded brick-throwing vandals twenty years ago. The Canarsie Post office had spent at least $3,500 to repair several broken windows - which had been smashed and replaced just a few weeks earlier. As a result of the incidences, post office officials had metal gratings installed over all the windows around the facility… …Canarsiens could also pick up a copy of our fine publication for only 20 cents! If you wanted to subscribe, all you had to dish out was $10 for the entire year. Our publication was also jam-packed with a mélange of ads and stories in just 48 pages!… …That was probably because some of the columns, many which we still run, were a lot shorter. Our "Community Guide," presently two pages, used to be called "WhatWhereWhen: An Up-to-Date Guide to Exciting Places and Events Happening In and Around Our Town," and took up less than one page... ...Our religious section was compiled of two pages and listed the hours of worship of over a dozen temples and churches. Our medical section was comprised of two pages - one filled with business card advertisements and the other was made up of a few health columns. …One section that hasn't changed much is the kids' page, which used to be called "Fun and Games." It was brimming with trivia, crossword puzzles, cartoons and word games. While youngsters now have a "Just Kidding" page filled with clever tests of skill, we've added the popular Chinese number game Sudoku and a common denominator game called QuizX to the mix of mindbenders … …If you were looking to buy a house in Canarsie twenty years ago, you could still check out ads from Fillmore Real Estate at 9301 Flatlands Avenue. One family houses went for about $140,000 and two family houses sold for approximately $250,000. The starting price for these homes are now $400,000 to $700,000.
