What's Your Opinion?
Compiled by Bill O'Neill

Question: Last week the mayor proposed ending public school teachers virtual lifetime job security, vowing to make standards for new teachers more strict and make ineffectual educators accountable for failing students. Do you agree? Why or why not?

"I agree with the mayor. Why not? After all, the parents are primarily accountable for their children. But I've seen a lot of instances where teachers don't connect with their students. They're indifferent." -Jesus Cruz, Canarsie
"I agree. The entire school system is failing. Teachers don't really care about educating you. They just make sure you have good attendance so they can get paid. The mayor is doing the right thing." -Duane Randal, Canarsie
"Well, actually, teachers ought to be accountable for their students. If students aren't up to par, then teachers have to take the appropriate action - offer the students tutoring or after school programs and in some cases, special education. Also, tenure shouldn't be something to get lazy by. All the teachers should be accountable." -Bill Rochler, Canarsie
"There are a lot of changes that need to be made. The mayor is taking the first step. Once you have that union job, it's nearly impossible to have that person removed. And the students as well as teaching colleagues suffer as a result. We need teachers to be held accountable for failing students, because otherwise the whole educational system will suffer. There has to be some system in place to extract teachers who are not performing adequately." -Pesia Paolucci, Canarsie
